Pearl S. Buck Science Fair
Register to participate.
All young scientists wishing to display a project at the fair must register in advance through this online form. We strongly encourage early registration in order to reserve your space and your project board. Final registration deadline is February 1, 2020.
Projects should be student driven.
Project ideas should come from the students, and the project should be driven by them. Parents should use their best judgment in deciding when to get involved, such as when there is a potential safety issue. Parents may provide some guidance, but it is important that each child be able to call the project his or her own. We will be asking students to explain their project and be able to answer several questions about it. You may find this link helpful for setting up your presentation. http://sciencefair.math.iit.edu/display/
Working with someone else.
You may work on your project independently, with a partner, or with a small group. However, all participants must be 3rd or 4th grade students at Pearl S. Buck Elementary.
Need help choosing a topic?
When it comes to choosing a topic, the sky is the limit! What have you wondered about? The best topics come from your own genuine curiosity about how something works, or why something is the way that it is. But if you have trouble thinking of something on your own, the internet is full of resources to help you choose a topic. Don't be shy about choosing something completely different. Potato batteries can be interesting, but common. Know someone in the aerospace industry? An engineer? A chemist? Maybe they can help with ideas and/or resources. It is acceptable to use your connections to help with your project. If an expert helps, we just ask that the presenting student(s) acknowledge the help, and be able to explain the project on their own.
Judging and awards.
The goal of our science fair is simply to encourage scientific exploration and discovery. Each participant will have an opportunity to briefly present their project to many people. Some adults will have a list of questions to ask, and will provide feedback about the young scientist's presentation of his or her project. However, we will also ask science fair visitors to vote on which projects will be invited to participate in the Neshaminy District STEAM Expo on April 1st, 2020. Practice talking about/answering these Science Fair Questions to improve your presentation. You will find information about what we ask people to consider when recommending projects for the STEAM Expo by clicking here. Due to space limitations, a maximum of 6 projects can be recommended for the Expo.
Volunteers needed!
A big event like the science fair wouldn't be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. We have a few jobs to be done, so if you think you can spare an hour or two on the day of the fair, we would love your help. Please contact Brian Kern at bkern@neshaminy.org. We'll need help with presenter greeting/sign-in, table numbering, and general set-up.
Presentation Delivery/Take Home
All projects should be brought with students when they arrive on the evening of the event. Plan to arrive around 6:00 PM to set-up. We will have an in-school presentation on Friday, 2/28. However, at the conclusion of the evening presentation, please plan to take home elements of your child's display that cannot be thrown out or easily brought home on the bus. Parents may choose to come to school on 2/28 to retrieve project items after the in-school presentation.
